A win for trans rights in schools.
Here's what happened in 2023.
Three school districts in Monmouth County and one in Morris County tried to adopt new policies that would require schools to inform a parent if a student changed their gender identity or name in school.
While New Jersey's Attorney General, Matt Platkin, sued the districts, saying it went against state guidance called five, seven, five six adopted under Governor Chris Christie.
The lower court blocked the schools from adopting the new policies and the case has moved to the appellate court, which this week sided in favor of the lower court, saying the new policies of informing a parent showed a clear violation of the law against discrimination because they singled out transgender students.
However, in this week's decision, the appellate judges did also say the four districts do not have to adopt five, seven, five, six, and they have the option to rewrite their own policies.
The districts are calling that a win.
However, they still need to work with the New Jersey Division of Civil Rights in creating those policies.
