Are you ready?# Three, two, one, blast off.
Kid Vision Space Adventures vehicles in space.# Hi, it's Miss Penny and today we are at the Kennedy Space Center visitor complex to find out# how astronauts travel to space and what kind of vehicles they use to get there.
Here on Earth, we# use cars, buses, boats, and airplanes to travel from place to place.
But what kind of vehicles# do we use in space?
When I think about space, I think about rockets.
Rockets are powerful# vehicles that carry astronauts into space.
A rocket needs lots of power to push up and away# from the Earth.
That's why rockets carry so much fuel.
When the fuel burns, hot gases rush out of# the bottom of the rocket.
The rocket pushes the gases down and the gases push the rocket up.
This# is called thrust.
The Key Vision kids and I had a chance to make our own rockets.
Well, hello# everybody.
My name is Jenna and I'm a member of the Steam Team.
Steam stands for science,# technology, engineering, art, and math.
So, we add creativity to everything about STEM.# Super fun.
And today we're gonna do our very own rocket launch.
Have you guys ever seen a rocket# launch before?
Okay.
Well, today we are going to do our special own chemical a rocket [music]# launch using something I call film canisters.
Do any of you know what a film canister is?# Okay.
You'll definitely have to ask your parents maybe a little bit later or Miss Penny, but a# film canister [music] was used back in the day with digital camera.
You'd put this brown strip# called film.
Today it's going to be our rocket.
You see over here we have our lovely rocket# garden.
And to send rockets into space like that, how do you guys think NASA does it?
Like fume and# stuff in here, chemicals.
So they create a very powerful force using chemistry [music] and they# aim all that force going downward.
Can you guys push downward for me against the launch pad?
Then# eventually it builds and it builds and it builds until it's able to lift up rockets all the way# up into space.
And it's all because of chemistry.
So today we have something called Alka-Seltzer.# Alka-Seltzer is a medicine used for painterly leaf, but today it's going to be our fuel for our# rocket.
We're going to add a little bit of water.
Oh, and what starts to happen?
Oh, it's it's# moving by itself.
It starts to get dissolving and it's creating [music] some gas.
So that's# what we're going to do.
I have five rockets here and I'm going to give you guys each a [music]# piece of Alka-Seltzer.
You're going to break it up into some smaller pieces and then we're going to# get ready for launch.
Pretty cool.
So go ahead.
Here's your piece.
It's creating gas.
And the gas# is what we're going to use to launch the rocket.
Exactly.
Right.
Just Just like how NASA, they# use liquid propellant, liquid [music] hydrogen, and liquid oxygen.
They can ignite those to create# a powerful force.
It's all melting.
And so here it's dissolving.
It's forming into a gas.# That's the gas that's going to fuel our film canister.
So go ahead.
We're going to break# those up.
And you can each pick a canister and start putting the pieces in there.
going to expand# as the gas just [music] how we see the gas here that gas is going to expand and expand till it# creates such a powerful force.
We're going to flip the rocket upside down and then for every# action [music] there is an equal and opposite reaction.
That's a guy named Isaac Newton's third# law of motion and that is at the heart of sending rockets [music] into space.
So we aim all the# force going downward and then what does it do everyone?
It blastes it up.
It eventually builds# until it lifts it all the way up into space.
So obvious bubbles are going to build up and move# the canister.
Exactly.
Right.
Typically a launch you [music] have to be at least three miles away# from the launch pad just because of how loud it can get.
And they also NASA can release millions# of gallons of water so that the [music] sound travels through the water instead of through# the air or it would be damaging to our ears.
All right guys, you ready?
Now we can pretend.# Now these are going to go pretty high.
But NASA when they do it, like I told you guys earlier,# they can't use Alka-Seltzer and water because they need a way more powerful force.
All# right, here we go.
Let's do our first rocket.
So, I'm going to add that water and you're# going to see it's [music] going to start to get fizzy.
So, we're going to lock# that gas in.
You guys ready?
Here we go.
And pop goes the rocket.
Now, it's a satellite# in space.
All right, let's do our next one.
Here we go, you guys.
We're going to lock it in.
Five,# four, three.
Chemistry was at the heart of sending our rockets up in the air and just how they# send NASA's rockets into space.
I had a chance to see an actual rocket launch at the Kennedy# Space Center.
It was so exciting and so cool.
For many years, astronauts traveled to space on# vehicles called space shuttles.
Space shuttles were very special because they could launch like# a rocket and return to Earth like an airplane.
Space shuttles carried [music] astronauts,# equipment, and supplies into orbit around the Earth.
They helped build and service the# International Space Station and launch important scientific missions.
NASA flew 135 shuttle# missions before the shuttle program ended in 2011.
But not all space vehicles carry people.
These# special vehicles are called rovers.
Rovers travel across the surface of other planets and the# moon, collecting information for scientists.
Mars rovers have cameras, tools, and other# instruments that help scientists learn about the red planet.
Because Mars is millions of miles# away, scientists send commands from Earth and wait for the rover to respond.
It's a little like# driving a remote control car from another planet.
Today we learned about some amazing vehicles# in space.
Rockets help us leave the Earth.
Space shuttles helped astronauts travel and# work in orbit around the Earth.
And rovers help us explore distant worlds.
Maybe one day you will# travel in or design the next great space vehicle.
